PluralSight Learning Path
Microsoft Exam 70-487

I know in the summary for 70-486 I included a few different books for studying, but in this case the only "general" book that was applicable was the Exam Ref, and frankly, it's value is highly suspect.  About halfway through the process are started seriously questioning whether it was worth the effort to even try to read it, and there were many chapters I straight up skipped.  It has a two star rating on Amazon for a reason...

The books and PluralSight resources are generally pretty specific to the individual exam topics, so I would rely on the links embedded in the individual posts for the most relevant resources.

Posts by Objective:

Pretty proud of myself that I actually managed to write all these posts in under a year.  I was thoroughly burned out by the time I got the Web API, so those aren't really up to the same quality and content standard as all the rest.  They can't all be winners...

Also, while writing up this summary I found out that changes were made to the test effective January 15, 2018... talk about crap timing. Doh!  So my posts won't be perfect...

Sigh... they literally dropped the entire WCF requirement and added a bunch of additional Azure stuff... ugh...

Accessing Data

Query and Manipulate Data by Using the Entity Framework

Design and Implement WCF Services

Creating and Consuming Web API-based services

Designing and Implementing Web Services (basically all new)

  • Consume a WCF service
  • Implement serverless Azure Web Services (New objective)
  • Implement traffic management in Azure (New objective)
  • Implement Azure API Management (New objective)
  • Monitor web services (New objective)

Deploying Web Applications and Services

[UPDATE 1/26/2018, later that day...]

Well I took the test this morning and passed with a score of 700, which is literally the minimum passing score.  Not bad considering the amount of material that changed.  Officially an MCSD, whoopee... Now to ride off into the sunset of Java land and never touch .NET again... #irony

  1. How much and how in depth is the new content?

    1. I think the new content was a relatively smaller percentage of the overall total. Depth you could argue either way... most of the questions in that section were of the form "give problem scenario, give potential solution, does it meet requirements?" and it was literally yes/no. One could argue that you'd need some depth on the subject to be able to answer correctly but the question format doesn't really give you any room for nuance. I wasn't impressed.

  3. Congratulations on achieving the MCSD certification! I passed the 487 exam a few days ago. Your blog has been the best source of information and has been invaluable for passing the exam. I was going to sign up earlier, and I felt I was ready until I suddenly discovered that the curriculum had changed. I got through the new material with a couple of evenings of bingewatching Channel 9 and Youtube videos. Don't know if it was just coincidence for me, but I felt that a quite large part of the exam consisted of the new material focusing on Azure. I think it's an interesting topic, thinking about whether to continue with the 70-535 exam now.

Anyways, thank you for all the notes!

      Thanks!

    2. Congrats Jon, it's always nice to hear my blog was helpful. I was in the same boat as you, put off signing up till I felt completely ready and then they changed the curriculum, I was so annoyed! And it could have just been in my head, but it definitly *felt* like the new stuff was overrepresented lol.

  5. Hi Troy,

First of all, thank you for this study guide, it has proved immensely helpful. Do you mind sharing how you prepared for the new material?

    Thanks,

    1. Honestly Chase I barely prepped specifically for the new stuff. If I remember right, I only had a couple days between when I learned the material changed and when I sat for the test, and I was so burned out I kinda just threw up my hands and said screw it. I think I might have googled some of the sub topics, but I didn't go in depth. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

    2. i have failed with 687 :( . @wesley, How did you prepare for Azure advance topic questions, which were scenario based ? m not confident about those at all. questions were very different from content mentioned by Microsoft

      Delete
    3. The topics mentioned on this site and the official microsoft site are the topics asked on the exam. I only used the offical microsoft msdn documentation for those topics.

  8. I passed the 70-486 about a week ago, and it had a little bit of docker in it. Should i learn docker for the 487?
Has anyone taken the exam recently?

    1. Congrats on passing 70-486. I don't remember Docker being a significant part of the test (course it's a bit of a blur for me now anyway)

  9. Hi Al,
I am going to take the exam on May 21, 2918. We found a dumps for the exam but I am afraid to just focus on the dumps, I did some research if there are changes on the exam then I found this blog.

Can you give me some tips before I take this exam?
    Thank you in advanced.

    1. Where did you find the dumps? can you send me a link please? tnaks

    2. Realize I'm a little late (not that I'd have had any deeply helpful insight anyway), hope the exam went well. As a general rule I would strongly advise against focusing on exam dumps. Sadly it cheapens the value of the certification for everyone (Side note, I'll delete any comments linking to them...)

  11. Hi there Troy

First off, thank you for this awesome blog! You are truly a shining light in the so called dark world of 70-487 resources!
I am doing the exam on Monday (28th of May), and i was hoping you could answer me this:
Did you encounter a lot of the new content in your case study section of the exams?

I know you cannot give too much details about the exam, so i understand if you cannot answer.
I'm just stressing bout how much more difficult the exam is going to be with all the new Azure content.

  12. Does the new exam content only cover .NET Core or .Net Standard too? In addition, does it cover .NET Core 2.0 and .NET Standard 4.7?

    1. I don't recall seeing any .NET Core material on the test. The new material really was all about Azure.

request to update the blog through step-by-step. Also, find the Azure news at

  17. Thank you Tory for the sharing these helpful resources.

I passed my 70-487 exam yesterday and achieved a 850 score

There was some question about docker container, azure traffic manager, azure event hub.

    Hoping the best for everyone.

  18. Thanks for this great resource! It really helped a great deal. I passed my 70-487 and got my MCSD today with a 788 score.

  19. Passed this exam today(761) and your guide was a massive help. Too many sections of the exam objectives on the MS site were vague or referred to the old name of a service in Azure. Not to mention the Preparation resources section was useless. Without your guide I would have had to trawl google/.net documentation looking for what was actually being asked.

I'm not a .Net developer and have only used the Azure technologies for less than 6 months. So I was pretty much picking up everything from scratch.

  20. Your content has been of great help to me while studying for the exam. Thanks alot!

  21. I would say That a Architecting Microsoft Azure Solutions Certification is highly respected With Both IT & non-IT communities where strong project management skills are required. I would suggest getting your Azure Solutions Certification. You can prepare yourself for the 70-535 questions to get Microsoft Azure Solutions credentials.

  22. Hi All,

Took the test today. Passed with an 805. Used mostly this website and the official measure up and msdn to study. Use the exam change document and hit all the sections in black on this website. This is about the best source material you will find studying for this test.

My test was heavy on Azure. WCF is still around but less about implementation and used more in the case studies about connecting and talking to WCF services. That being said I would make sure to hit all new content HARD. Lots of azure fabric, event hubs, azure containers, docker, and new tech questions. Be familiar with what all of it does, when to use it, and how to deploy it via azure portal AND powershell. Also know the build pipeline for all different azure tech.

The last two sections seemed to be the most heavily represented for me. This was definitely a more conceptual test compared to some of the implementation heavy exams. Info seems to be sparse for this exam online.

    Hope this helps!

  24. Thank you for your blogs on 70-486 and 70-487! I got my MCSA back in april, and just got my MCSD today. This blog has been a huge inspiration in helping me achieve my goals! Your study guides have been very good, much better than anything official.

  25. Thanks for putting all the time into writing your guide! With your help (and a few years of practical DevOps experience), I've (today) passed my first MCP exam (with a 700, but still).

To anyone stumbling on this blog now, this study guide really is still spot on. I didn't even really need to delve much deeper into the linked resources.

  28. Hi all!

I have a dump question, bur I need a confirmation:
Is it obligatory to take the 70-486 certification exam in order to get to take the 70-487 certification exam?
I have only passed the 70-483 and I want to take the 70-487 exam as next step. I don't know if it is enough as a MCSA level to get through MCSD?

    Thank you in advance!
